CollabNet launches software as a service offering

by jon on July 15, 2005

This is big news. Collabnet are the guys behind the excellent subversion source control system. The (very pricy) CollabNet collaboration platform has always seemed a tough sell to me. Moving to a salesforce.com-style business model could be a big win for them.

Yet another collaboration tool that has a subscription model (like gotomeeting, like basecamp, like copilot). This trend is being driven by the flattening of the software development world: when your developers are on another continent, it takes a lot of infrastructure to communicate with them. The bleeding edge of software as a service is turning out to be collaboration tools. This makes sense, since phone bills have habituated people to the concept of paying for communication by the month.
